Game Summary/Notes:
This game wasn't as out of hand as the score might lead you to
believe. Giovanna's was winning 2-0 after 1, 4-2 after 2, 5-4
after 3. We were down only 9-7 after 4, and 14-11 after 6.
Then Buster's put up seven runs in the 7th - on two very lame home runs,
one of them a grand slam that would have been a routine fly-ball out on
any other field - to put the game away ... On the other hand, wow, did
we hit poorly. As a team we were only 16-for-37 (.432). That
sort of futility doesn't normally score you 14 runs, but we were aided
by three "safe-on-errors" and FIVE walks (Our pitcher walked
NONE by the way because he's really good.) ... Only four people had two
or more hits (Capilo, Engle, Gabrielli and Delp.) ... Steve Julian got
his forearm stepped on when he fell running the bases. His arm was
cut and very swollen later that night ... Mike Capilo's two home runs
extended his team lead to EIGHT which now doubles Tom Bazrd's 2nd best
of four home runs ... Speaking of Tom, after the game most of the team
went over to Jeff Schaefer's house where Tom and I kicked everyone ass
in pool in something like 8 consecutive games. We also got to see
Shaeff's award-winning bike which is totally insane, didn't get to eat
any red-beat eggs, gave each other the finger, drank a few shots, looked
at Shaeff's basement full of basketball memorabilia, didn't get to see
Teri Weigel naked on DVD, and looked up the value of Steve Julian's
baseball cards that are covered in ketsup. Dickie spent most of
the night petting the cats and waiting for the Domino's guy to show
up. I, of course, paid for Dickie's pizza because I'm a very
generous person - and, well, because I owed him. |

Tom Barzd (2-for-3, Walk, RBI, 2 runs)
Mike Capilo (2-run home run, his team leading 6th of the year)
Game Summary/Notes:
Car-Tech put up a 7-spot in the top of the 2nd inning to go up 9-4,
but Pizza-aya came right back with one in the bottom of the second and
FIVE in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by Gabrielli, Barzd,
Zeigler, Schaeffer and Tantum - to make it 10-9 Pizza after 3.
Going into the bottom of the 7th, The Pizza was down 15-14. Bazrd
singled, Zeigler walked, F-8, Schaeffer walked to load the bases with
one out, setting the stage for a dramatic game-ending 1-out 2-run single
by Jeff Tantum ... Giovanna's threw out three runners at third base -
two by Jeff Schaeffer and one by Scott Metcalfe ... The lake at Angelica
was completely drained a few days earlier when the damn broke during a
weekend storm ... Keith DeLong was in the stands for most of the game,
but I believe he missed the fun ending ... The strike zone was the worse
I've experienced in a long time. I got pulled from this game after
four innings, but it was hardly my fault that I had given up runs.
My two walks were NOT walks, but at least it wasn't as bad as the
Steelers pitcher who walked five including two in the 7th ... I'd also
like to add that if Jeff hadn't won the game for us, I was coming up
next and I would have, thank you. Jeff is just very stingy.
Always has to take all the glory for himself. |

T1 |
Julian scores on an RBI single by
Capilo, G1-H0 |
B1 |
Hahn opens the game with 3
consecutive singles to plate one run, but then goes down 1-2-3
to end the threat, G1-H1. |
T2 |
2-out hits by Schaeffer, Metcalfe
and Engle score three, G4-H1. |
B2 |
After a lead-off out, Hahn again
gets three consecutive hits but can do no more than score one
run leaving the Pizza off easy, G4-H2 |
T3 |
Giovanna's opens the inning with 4
straight singles (Gabrielli, Capilo, Barzd and Hunter), scoring
two runs, but then goes down 1-2-3, G6-H2. |
B3 |
Hahn again came out strong, 3 of
the first 4 hitters reaching base, the last of which scored on
one of the ugliest plays of the year which had THREE errors on
one play. But those 3 runs would be all they'd get. G6-H5. |
T4 |
Giovanna's continued to put runs on
the board every inning, this time with the help of RBI singles
by Julian, Capilo, Barzd and Hunter - the last three coming with
2-outs. G10-H5. |
B4 |
Then it seemed the wheels fell
off: Single, single, walk, Sac-fly, single, single,
single, L4, single, error, F8...and all of a sudden the game
was tied at 10. But a funny thing happened this inning
- Hahn started yapping and that apparently was all the
inspiration that was needed. |
T5 |
2-out hits by Metcalfe, Engle,
Julian and Gabrielli scored 3 more. G13-H10. |
B5 |
Hahn goes down 1-2-3! |
T6 |
Bazrd single, F9, Delp single,
Ziegler Sac-Fly, F8. G14-H10. |
B6 |
F8, single, F7, 4-6.
G14-H10. |
T7 |
With 2-outs again, Giovanna's
loaded the bases thanks to singles by Engle and Julian and a
walk by Gabrielli, but couldn't score. G14-H10. |
B7 |
The first two Hahn batters
reached on ERRORS. A single made the score 14-11 with no
one out and runners on 1st and 2nd, but Hahn would then go down
1-2-3 to end the game. |
A close game? This 3-run victory was the closest of the
year. The closest game previously was a 12-7 win over, guess who,
Hahn Exterior ... Dave Engle was 9-for-9 this week and
now leads the team with a .725 average. Not only did Dave have an
impressive game at the plate, he also saved the game by making two
consecutive stellar plays on the mound on the last two batters to end
the game ... Mike changed his name to GNip-GNop ... Missy Julian gave
birth to Kyle Julian early in the morning of this day, their second born
but first boy! Congratulations Steve and Missy! It should be
noted that Steve says child birth is really gross, and seemed
particularly grossed out by the placenta. Nicola pointed out there
is a lot of nutrients in the placenta and that some species actually eat
it after the birth ... Mickey Mouse made an appearance on Dickie's
shirt. |

Game Summary/Notes:
As ugly as the previous game was, this one was completely the
opposite. Consider this: EIGHT starters out of 11 had AT
LEAST three hits in the game and we only played 5 innings!
Giovanna's sent 15 to the plate in the third inning - Dickie Delp hit a
homer AND a single in that inning ... During the game, Rachel gave me a
kiss on the arm ... After the game Scott's wife revealed that he is a
very bad driver. |

This was about as ugly as you could possibly get. As a team we
were only on base seven times (7-for-21), we scored no runs, we had no
extra-base hits, hit into a double-play to end the game, and we
committed an astounding EIGHT errors in just five innings. Six
people out of 11 were 0-for-2, Scott Metcalfe only got to bat one time,
and the top six in the line-up were a combined 2-for-12. Meanwhile
the West Lawn Owls scored 21 runs and it would have been more had they
not been nice about it, taking one base at a time and swinging at just
about anything in the last two innings. |

Game Summary/Notes:
Another game without Pete Gabrielli (back) and Dave Engle (vaccination),
while Steve Julian was late thanks to a train. Mike Capilo
returned from the 5-day Disabled List, and Jeff Tantum returned from
yelling at Winnie the Poo and friends ... The offense was extremely
sluggish, and if you consider that we were only 13-for-31 (.419) as a
team, it's amazing that we actually won, let alone 9-to-1.
Gilbert's seriously helped our cause by committing EIGHT errors.
Giovanna's only scored runs in the 3rd and 4th innings, but scored big,
putting up a 6-spot and a 3-spot ... The Pizza is now 2-0 against
Gilbert's and have outscored them 24-2 ... Chris Mal, everybody's pal,
held Gilbert's to only seven hits, their lone run scoring on a fielder's
choice after two weak singles in the 6th inning. This was the
first full game he pitched that he didn't strike anyone out. (It's
fun talking about myself in 3rd person!) Chris is the man! ...
Eddie Key may not own Giovanna's but he owns the bar! ... Jamie
Schlessinger traded for Jermaine Dye prior to the game, and then did a
good impression of Ichiro Suzuki from home to third during the game ...
Chris Hunter and Jamie both scrapped their legs up pretty good, but -
not to worry - it was captured on film. Look for their gruesome
injuries coming soon to a website near you! |

Game
Summary/Notes:
Giovanna's was missing three of their top four hitters in Dave
Engle (vaccination), Pete Gabrielli (back muscle that makes it hard
to sneeze) and Mike Capilo (nasty boo-boo). Although the
hitting wasn't terrible in their absence, it certainly could have
been better ... In addition to missing Engle, Gabrielli and
Capilo, the team was also without starting firstbaseman and .542
hitter Jeff Tantum, while left-centerfielder Jeff Schaeffer is now
playing with a broken foot ... Flanagan's seems to have Giovanna's
number this year. Pizza-eya are 0-2 against Flanagan's and
8-0 against the rest of the league; and have been outscored 17-42
against them, while Giovanna's have outscored the rest of the
league 130-37. Think about that for a second - the rest of
the league has scored less runs against Giovanna's than Flanagan's
has in TWO games ... This game had disaster written all over it
from the start. Flanagan's lead off with a home run.
Their inning wasn't over until they had scored a total of seven
runs, thanks largely in part to THREE errors plus a botched
double-play that counted as a fielder's choice. Although the
game never got completely out of hand, it was essentially over
after the first inning ... Bev Mal showed up for the first time
this year - she's a babe. How did Chris get a wife so cute?
... Dickie Delp was quoted as saying "It's clean!" to
describe a fielded base hit. After the game, he was
overheard saying that he had a "floater" the other day
for the first time in years, and recommends cutting cheese out of
your diet to cut back on toilet paper ... Tom Barzd offered to set
Dickie up on a date with his big friend ... Steve farted a lot
after the game. |
